Ten Years Strong: Recent Litigation Highlights

Larson attorneys continued to serve as dedicated advocates for our clients in 2025.

In a year marked by a rapidly shifting economic, regulatory, and geopolitical landscape, we remain mindful of our role as trusted advisors, looking ahead to the challenges our clients may face and providing steady support and solutions in moments of uncertainty.

We approach the issues confronting our clients as strategic partners in their success – understanding that a victory in the courtroom carries broader business, reputational, and operational impacts. In 2025, our work spanned matters from high-stakes appeals and securities class actions to litigation aimed at helping families rebuild after losing their homes in California’s wildfires.

Our culture of mentorship and collaboration continues to be a foundation of our growth; in 2025, we welcomed nine new attorneys and celebrated the promotion of two new partners and one counsel.

As we reflect on our firm’s first 10 years, we’re grateful for the exceptional colleagues, clients, fellow professionals, and friends who have placed their trust in us and supported our work. We look forward to what 2026 brings.

– Stephen G. Larson, Founding Partner

$250 Million Settlement Approved in Securities Class Action

$250 Million Settlement Approved in Securities Class Action

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive agreed to settle a federal securities class action brought by investors. Represented by Larson as co-counsel with Kessler Topaz, shareholders alleged that Rivan overstated its long-term profitability ahead of its 2021 initial public offering by underpricing electric truck and SUV models. After three years of litigation and independent negotiations, a federal judge approved a $250 million settlement in December 2025. Charles Larry Crews Jr. v. Rivian Automotive Inc. et al. (C.D. Cal.)

Appellate Court Affirms Win for Law Firm Client

In May 2025, a California Court of Appeal panel upheld a trial ruling in favor of Larson client Bird Marella, a well-respected trial boutique. The case arose from a 2019 lawsuit filed by Bird Marella’s former client Frontline Medical Associates, alleging failure to clarify potential conflicts of interest. The trial court found extensive misconduct by Frontline Medical and its attorneys, dismissed the case, and awarded more than $250,000 in costs to Bird Marella. The appellate court upheld that decision, bringing the dispute to a close. Frontline Medical Associates Inc. v. Bird Marella et al. (Cal. Ct. App., 2d Dist., Div. 1)

Trade Secret Lawsuit Dismissed

A federal court dismissed a trade secret lawsuit against Larson client Cleanline Management. The case was brought by competing cannabis manufacturer Greenmount, which sought to block distribution of a product line developed by a former employee. Greenmount alleged misappropriation of trade secrets, interference with contractual relations, trade libel, and unfair competition. In 2024, the court found that Greenmount had not shown ownership of any trade secrets, and has now dismissed all claims with prejudice, bringing the case to a complete close. Greenmount LLC v. Cleanline Management LLC (C.D. Cal.)

Ninth Circuit Panel Rules Unanimously for LDS Church

Ninth Circuit Panel Rules Unanimously for LDS Church

In a decisive victory for Larson’s client, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled unanimously in favor of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dismissing a fraud lawsuit brought by a former member over the use of tithed contributions. The plaintiff sought to recover $5 million in tithing contributions, alleging that the Church improperly used those funds for commercial projects in downtown Salt Lake City. The Church demonstrated that the project was funded with earnings generated from invested funds – not the donations themselves. In her en banc opinion, Judge Michelle T. Friedland rejected the plaintiff’s claims, writing, “No reasonable juror could conclude that the Church misrepresented the source of funds for the City Creek project.” James Huntsman v. Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (9th Cir.) (en banc)

California Wildfires

Larson Files Antitrust Lawsuits Against California Insurers

Larson Files Antitrust Lawsuits Against California Insurers

Larson, alongside co-counsel Shernoff Bidart Echeverria LLP filed two complaints in Los Angeles County against major California insurance carriers on behalf of property owners impacted by the 2025 wildfires that devastated Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and Altadena. The lawsuits allege antitrust violations through a conspiracy limiting property policies in the affected areas and forcing homeowners to accept the state’s insurance plan of last resort, the California FAIR Plan, as their only option for coverage. These property owners now find themselves burdened with expensive policies providing far less coverage than they need, resulting in a gap between their actual property losses and the limits of their FAIR Plan policies that amounts to millions of dollars.

Suing Insurance Companies for Systemic Underinsurance

Larson, along with co-counsel Shernoff Bidart Scheverria LLP, also filed complaints in Los Angeles County against California insurers on behalf of families who lost their homes in last year’s wildfires, alleging a scheme to systematically underinsure properties in a bid to sell more policies and increase market share. The lawsuits claim that by using inaccurate or overly general data about a policy holder’s home, insurers pushed the estimated cost of rebuilding down in order to offer more attractively-priced policies and reduce their own liability. As a result, many homeowners – who rely on their insurers to accurately assess rebuilding costs – found themselves with policies that cover far less that is needed to recover.
