Emily Orman has broad experience advising clients on high-stakes litigation and regulatory matters across industries, including the technology and media and entertainment sectors.
She litigates in both federal and state court, including multi-district and class action proceedings, and has experience at all stages of litigation. Her work includes pre-litigation counseling, writing dispositive motions and briefs, preparing witnesses for deposition and trial, managing large-scale discovery, handling settlement negotiation, preparing for trial and mediation, and representing clients on appeal.
Emily has experience working on high-profile matters involving emerging technologies and platform liability, including AI-related defamation litigation and disputes addressing alleged harms tied to social media platforms and video game use. She played a leading role in a major data privacy class action, managing discovery and expert workstreams.
Previously, Emily was part of a trial team that secured a complete defense in one of the largest acquisition-related stockholder challenges to proceed through trial. She authored the briefing that helped the team obtain a full affirmance of the trial court’s decision on appeal. Emily has also advised a mixed martial arts promoter on a monopsony class action from the early stages of litigation through successful settlement on the eve of trial; represented a global streaming platform in a defamation action; and counseled the liquidators of a prominent cryptocurrency hedge fund in bankruptcy proceedings involving billions in assets previously under management.
Emily maintains an active pro bono practice focused on asylum law and constitutional rights. She regularly appears in immigration court and has conducted direct examinations of both clients and expert witnesses in asylum proceedings. Emily has successfully represented a detainee in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, securing reversal of an asylum denial and release on bond, and has worked with the Northern California Innocence Project to assist a wrongfully incarcerated client in seeking post-conviction relief. Her immigration advocacy includes assisting survivors applying for relief under the Violence Against Women Act and minors pursuing Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. In partnership with the ACLU of Louisiana, Emily also represented a civil rights plaintiff in a Section 1983 police brutality case, handling proceedings before the Louisiana district court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Most recently, Emily helped a U.S. Air Force veteran successfully expunge his criminal record, enabling him to access housing and employment opportunities.
Prior to joining Larson, Emily was a litigation associate at two Am Law 50 firms. She served as office leader of the Women Lawyers Group and as a member of the recruiting committee at her prior firm. While attending Yale Law School, Emily was a member of the Capital Punishment Clinic and assisted her team in obtaining a favorable ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court. She also served as a research assistant to Professor Miriam Gohara and was a member of the Title IX Working Group.
