Founding Partner Stephen G. Larson was interviewed by Ross Todd for the AmLaw Litigation Daily “Litigation Leaders” series, which features litigators at some of “the most innovative law firms in the country.”
The wide-ranging interview explored Stephen’s background as a former federal prosecutor and federal district judge, his vision for the firm, its expansion into Washington, D.C. and London, and what sets Larson LLP apart.
Stephen’s early career as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the organized crime section and as a district judge informs the firm’s approach to litigation as generalists. “Those 20 formative years for me, both in the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the bench, were spend doing this real diverse caseload,” he said. “That’s the experience I want to share with the young attorneys who come work at our firm…It both makes the experience of being a litigator or trial lawyer more interesting and, on the other hand, I think it makes you a better trial lawyer.”
The feature highlights some of the firm’s current work in California, including a $190 million real estate finance dispute in Riverside Superior Court, a criminal jury trial involving the former Los Angeles County assessor, and a variety of class action defense and plaintiff matters. Reflecting on the firm’s Southern California roots, Stephen noted that every county in the area has engaged the firm for internal investigations or sensitive matters—even when the firm has opposed them on other matters. “I think that shows the high regard we’re held in by folks who know us well,” he said.
On what distinguishes Larson and its attorneys, Stephen observed, “We’re not intimidated by the courtroom. We welcome the courtroom. And as a result, we have that experience. We’re good advocates.”
“At the end of the day, trials are about telling a story. They’re about convincing a jury or judge that your client’s position is correct…anybody can bone up on the subject matter, but it’s knowing the rules, knowing how to present cases, knowing how to effectively communicate on behalf of your client: That’s what wins the trial.”
